West Virginia businesses join historic Africa trade mission

Monday, September 14 2015

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Eight West Virginia businesses are heading to Africa to expand export opportunities. The mission is being led by the West Virginia Development Office International Division in cooperation with the U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The mission is the largest-ever U.S. government-led trade mission to Africa, according to the U.S. Commercial Service.

The mission runs Sept. 14-21 and includes more than 100 companies and sponsoring organizations. The group will attend a business forum in Johannesburg, South Africa. The business forum provides West Virginia executives with one-on-one counseling with Senior Commercial Officers and other experts on local trends, opportunities, marketing intelligence, business climate and other key commercial factors. The forum will be followed by a reception hosted by the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa.

“Trade missions such as this one play a vital role in the process of increasing West Virginia’s presence in the global arena,” said Commerce Secretary Keith Burdette. “This is an opportunity for West Virginia business owners to hear from experts in local market conditions in Africa and meet face-to-face with international executives who are interested in our goods and services. These missions have contributed to new knowledge, relationships and exports in the past. I look forward to hearing about what they accomplish during this journey to Africa.”

Depending on their particular market interests, companies will also visit up to three sub-Saharan destinations, including Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania.  During the mission stops, companies will connect with qualified, pre-vetted potential business partners.
